Madison City Schools Unvails iPad App

MADISON, Alabama - May 17, 2013 - Madison City Schools now has an iPad® app that places a wealth of district information at users' fingertips.

Fittingly, the app was designed by a Madison City Schools student. Charles Boyd, a junior at Bob Jones High School, pitched the idea to the school system administration last fall and was given the go-ahead to design and develop the app.

It is available now in the Apple App StoreSM by searching "Madison City Schools", by clicking the "iPad App" link on the district's website, or by visiting

The app will provide quick access to a variety of information including:

   - Grades and attendance records
   - Lunch menus
   - Calendar and upcoming events
   - Library catalogs
   - Teacher and staff listings at each school
   - Individual school information (school contact, daily schedule, etc.)
   - Zoning information (maps, bus routes, and an address lookup that tells what school zone an address is located in)
   - School system contact information
   - School board policies

The app also enables students, teachers and staff to download and upload files to their personal school drives, allowing work saved on school computers to be edited on iPad.

Madison City Schools Superintendent Dr. Dee Fowler said the app is user friendly and was, appropriately, designed by a Madison student. "Providing information about our dynamic school district is vital and we're excited to be able to offer this to our community," Fowler said.

For Boyd, an iOS and web developer, app design is nothing new. He designed an app for First Baptist Church in Huntsville and also entered a beta version of the Madison City Schools iPad app in the Alabama Council for Technology in Education Fair in Montgomery in 2012 and won first place. His extra curricular activities at BJHS include FIRST Robotics, Computer Science Team and CyberPatriot National Cyber Security Competition where he serves as team captain. Boyd plans to pursue a degree in an engineering field after high school.

Boyd said he also designed the app with parents, teachers and other users in mind.

"Developing the Madison City Schools app has been exciting and rewarding," Boyd said. "I have gained valuable experience not only in coding and graphic design, but also in communication and collaboration. I know the app will have a valuable impact in Madison City Schools because it provides quick and simple access to many of the resources students use everyday. It will also enhance the use of the iPad in the classroom because students can now save their work to be accessed with any computer or iPad at the school or at home."

Madison City Schools will incorporate the app into the classroom starting with the 2013-2014 school year.
